5 Simple Tips For Finding The Perfect Photographer
For Your High School Senior Portraits
Selecting the best photographer for your senior portraits can seem like a daunting decision. Hiring the wrong photographer can be costly, ruin the whole experience, and drive you so crazy you’ll want to pull your hair out!
With over 40 years experience in the photography business, we wanted to put together a few important tips that will help make the process super simple for you, ensure an amazing experience & that will give you high-quality professional photos that you and your family will adore and remember for years to come!
1.) Photography Experience
Practice makes perfect, right? An experienced Photographer is familiar with the business, understands lighting, knows the best poses, has the right equipment, and can give you suggestions based on their years of experience working with Seniors. We recommend you look for someone established in the local community that can guide you throughout the process and has a long history of excellent customer service.
2.) Portrait Focused
The best Photographers will focus in only a few areas, so it’s important to work with a Photographer who specializes in working with children and families. Just because they may take great wedding, newborn, or real estate photography doesn’t make them the best candidate for your senior portraits. Make sure that senior portraits are an area that they focus in and makes up a large portion of their photography portfolio.
Make sure the photographer offers a style both parents and student can appreciate. According to Professional Photographers of America (PPA) research, both parents and students place a high value on the memories captured by senior portraits; so the style chosen should appeal to both.
4.) Friendly & Accommodating
Is the Photographer flexible to your needs and friendly? For instance, many seniors desire outdoor portraits. Does your photographer have his own outdoor studio or do you have to travel to another location. Something to consider when doing an on location shoot is: are you responsible for the photography permit, are there only certain areas you can use, do you have to battle crowds and risk having random people in the background of your portrait. Make sure your Photographer understands your needs and is willing to fill them. Also, make sure that the Photographer is communicative and replies to your emails or phone calls in a timely matter.
5.) Awesome Portfolio
We saved the best for last! One of the most important aspects of your research is checking out their portfolio of past senior portraits. This is where you can see past work they’ve done with other high school seniors including: poses, props, locations, backdrops, lighting, themes, and other small details to help you get a better idea of what they can offer and if they would be a good fit for you and your senior.
Some other things to look for when hiring a photographer include: Quality of the images, location and studio options, outfit changes, product choices (prints, digital images, etc.), comfort and rapport, cost and packages, etc…
